TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOU
I studied Geological Engineering and subsequently earned a master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering in my hometown, Türkiye.
WHAT IS YOUR WORKING BACKGROUND? IF YOU LIKE TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER BREAK
After graduating, I worked as a Research Assistant at a government university. Following that, I founded my own engineering company in Türkiye, specializing in ground investigation projects and natural hazard risk assessments. In 2020, amidst the pandemic, I relocated to the UK and had to take a break for a while.
WHAT BARRIERS HAVE YOU FACED WHEN APPLYING FOR ROLES?
I encountered several challenges during my job application process in the UK. Despite possessing extensive experience in the sector, adapting to the bureaucratic processes in the UK proved to be a significant learning curve for me. Additionally, the language barrier posed another obstacle. The contrasting approaches to engineering solutions between the UK and Türkiye might also be a factor, and companies may prefer candidates without these perceived disadvantages over my profile. In more accurate words, I was having a proper imposter syndrome. Consequently, this concern itself became a significant barrier in my case.
WHY DID YOU APPROACH STEM RETURNERS?
It’s quite an amusing story, to be honest. I was already applying for a lot of jobs advertised and was being interviewed or even offered jobs by many of them however none of them felt right since I believed I needed more support on my journey way back to work. Unfortunately, I initially misunderstood STEM Returners Programme, perceiving it as a general recruitment agency without delving into its actual purpose. I was aware that STEM Returners Programme specializes in supporting individuals with career gaps to re-enter the workforce. But to be honest I didn’t think they literally provide the support I required. I applied for a position they had announced, and to my surprise, a Returner Support Specialist from STEM Returners reached out to me. This unexpected contact turned out to be a valuable opportunity for me to gain insight into their true purpose and mission and from the first moment of my conversation with her, I knew I wanted to continue my career journey with them.
HOW DID STEM RETURNERS HELP?
I was not immediately hired upon contacting STEM Returners, primarily due to my expatriate status in the UK. Consequently, I had to wait for certain paperwork to be approved by the Home Office. Throughout this period, STEM Returners Programme consistently checked on my progress. Their unwavering support and commitment made me feel valued as an asset. I cannot express my appreciation enough for their dedication.
WHAT WAS THE END RESULT?
Once I resolved my status in the country, STEM Returners promptly arranged an interview with Binnies UK Ltd. I had an immediate interview with the company, and subsequently, I signed a 12-week contract, which later led to a permanent position offer. I am genuinely pleased to be working with Binnies UK Ltd. The process of restarting work couldn’t have been smoother, and it all transpired with the invaluable support of STEM Returners Programme and the exceptional companies they collaborate with.
HOW HAS THIS CHANGED YOUR CAREER?
I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I said that this experience has not only transformed my career but also significantly impacted my life. I am delighted to be able to pursue a job I love in a foreign country, and more importantly, within a very reputable company, with continuous support throughout the entire journey both by the STEM Returners Programme and the Binnies UK Ltd.

I am of the belief that STEM Returners Programme, and their schemes hold significant value for the industry.
