The technology group Wärtsilä is partnering with the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and Women’s Engineering Society (WES) to offer a unique STEM Returners programme for people returning to work after a career break.
The applicants for Wärtsilä’s STEM Returners program can be existing marine professionals or people with transferable skills from other industries. “The marine industry is rapidly changing. For example, digitalisation will have a fundamental impact on the needed skills and capabilities of our employees. We believe that the STEM Returners programme is an excellent way of recruiting talented people who have already worked in the marine sector or who want to learn new things and become marine professionals,” says Chris Rowlands, Director, Wärtsilä Seals & Bearings UK.
As part of this programme, Wärtsilä Seals & Bearings is especially looking for experts in different fields of engineering (mechanical, manufacturing, systems), R&D, simulation (fluid modelling, mechanical) as well as technical sales support. The participants of Wärtsilä’s programme will be stationed in Havant, Southern England. The application period for Wärtsilä’s programme has started and the deadline for applications is 31st March 2018.
Recruiting, developing and retaining the best available talents
STEM Returners is a programme to help employers recruit, develop and retain the best available talent, and to enable highly qualified and experienced candidates to restart their career. The programme also aims to redress the gender imbalance within STEM. “We are very happy that Wärtsilä has joined the STEM Returners program. People returning to work after a career break are a great untapped potential. A programme like this is an excellent way to welcome new people to the marine industry and to show them the vast range of opportunities that this industry can offer,” says Natalie Desty, Director of Workforce Development at IMarEST.
Alongside the experience gained from the work placement, the STEM Returners programme within Wärtsilä will also provide the candidates with career coaching, mentoring, and global networking opportunities. The programme can also open up further job opportunities for the candidates either at Wärtsilä or elsewhere in the marine and engineering industry.
