Tell us a little bit about you.
My name is Veronica and I am a British Venezuelan who came to the UK in 2007. Having studied for a degree in Civil Engineering in Venezuela, I supplemented this education by studying for a Master’s degree at the University of Brighton in 2014. My interests are varied. Professionally I have specialism and experience in the water sector, and personally I enjoy swimming, cooking and taking care of my two young daughters.
What is your working background?
Prior to having children and after achieving my Master’s degree, I worked for over 4 years for H+E Ltd as an assistant project engineer. After I had my first child I decided, due to the sky-high cost of childcare and our desire to have a second child, to take a career break to care for my daughter and have a second child, who was born in 2020. Once my youngest daughter was old enough to qualify for the 30 hours, I was ready to return to my career and looking forward to it.
What barriers have you faced when applying for roles?
With a career break of 5 years, I felt I was behind the curve in terms of developments in Engineering and rusty with my knowledge, and I was concerned that as a result employers would regard me as less employable than people who hadn’t had a career break. Thankfully with some time to refresh my knowledge and get up to date; a friendly, supportive, open-minded employer; and the support and encouragement of STEM Returners in applying for roles in the first place, I was able to manage the transition back into work.
Why did you approach STEM Returners and how did they help?
For support with managing the process of returning to work including a confidence boost and making connections with employers. By supporting me and giving me confidence that I could still access the kind of role I was looking for. Also, by making connections with employers and smoothing the process of applying for a role and being interviewed.
What was the end result?
I secured a great role with Binnies, who were a breath of fresh air in terms of their modern, supportive approach to career returners and recognising the importance of diversity in the workplace.
How has this changed your career?
My career is back on track thanks to Binnies, STEM Returners and my own efforts. I am grateful for all the help provided by both Binnies and STEM Returners.
What would you say about the programme overall?
An excellent way to manage the transition back into work after some time away, through gaining the support and encouragement needed to access the kind of role you are seeking.
Do you have any advice for returners like yourself?
Don’t be intimidated by absence from the workplace – with the right support and approach, transitioning back into work can be a smooth process.
