Tell us a little bit about you.
My name is Rasha and I am a British / Libyan national who moved to the UK in 2013 with my family. I have received my bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Tripoli and secured a civil engineering role with the Libyan Manmade River Authority for a few years. I am married with four children who keep me very busy. I have also studied naturopathic medicine since it is my hobby to learn about health and medicine in general.
What is your working background?
I have worked in the field of water hydraulics during my stay at the Libyan Manmade River Authority for a few years. After having my children, I decided to take a career break and focus on raising my children. Later, Libya went through civil war and we as a family decided to migrate to the UK and make it our permanent residence. Moving to the UK was very challenging for the whole family especially our children given the different culture, language and educational system that was completely different.
What barriers have you faced when applying for roles?
After a long career break, I found it very difficult to apply for an engineering role as I felt that I was not up to date on the latest in engineering. The STEM Returners programme has given me confidence to pursue a civil engineering career again because of the support provided and the confidence building they have given me. I always thought that joining an engineering company after an absence of 14 years would not be possible but with the STEM Returners’ support and the great team in Binnies, the transition was made easier for me and I managed to pass the probation period and become a full time civil engineer again.
Why did you approach STEM Returners and how did they help?
I found out about STEM Returners from the employment agency who got me in touch. They were able to explain to me the process and actively supported me throughout.
This programme is doing an amazing job helping people find jobs and get their careers back on track. The help provided is absolutely crucial and makes the process so much easier.
Do you have any advice for returners like yourself?
I full heartedly recommend everyone to get in touch and get the process started. There are many people who are in the same situation I was in and can benefit from the programme. When you have a team of professionals supporting you, the process becomes so much easier.
