Despite being a Microsoft Certified MBSI professional with a Masters degree in Network Systems and a BSc in Computer Science, a 2 year career break after relocating to the UK and starting a family meant that Seetha was finding it impossible to get past the application stage of jobs that she was suitably qualified for. Becoming increasingly disheartened and thinking about retraining, Seetha thankfully saw the BT STEM Returners pilot programme for Network Support Engineers in Ipswich before her skills were lost to the industry. Sailing through the interview process and 12 week training programme Seetha quickly demonstrated her capabilities and is now a permanent Support Engineer with BT. Here is her story:
Why did you approach STEM Returners?
I had relocated to the UK after the birth of my baby and I had a subsequent 2 years career break. Although I had previous experience and a post graduate degree from a UK University, it became very difficult for me to get in to a relevant job and build my confidence. At this point I was was starting to give up the hope of returning to my passion and was searching for some help.
How did STEM Returners help?
It helped me in many ways, below are the most important aspects:
- It helped me build my confidence which was low after receiving no feedback on my applications, it made me question whether my skills were valuable.
- STEM Returners identified an opening that matched my academic background and encouraged me to apply.
- Before starting the programme STEM Returners conducted Confidence to Return Training which was just what I needed to regain my confidence and remember the value that I had to add!
What was the end result?
The outcome is very satisfying! Initially I was offered a 12 week temporary role as part of the STEM Returners programme. This gave me an opportunity to prove myself and turned into a permanent position as a Support Engineer with BT.
How has this changed your career?
It has given me my career back! I had experience in IT related fields before coming to the UK and I really wanted to use these skills, my current job is in technology and very relevant to my academic background.
Would you recommend the programme?
Definitely! This is the best help for anyone who has a gap in their career due to any personal or professional reason. I found Natalie as the best coach who executed this programme very well for all of us.
