Returners programme becomes key part of dstl’s candidate attraction strategy

28th October 2019 | STEMReturners

In May 2018 the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) embarked on an innovative pilot programme aimed at giving experienced science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) professionals the confidence to step back into their careers after taking time away.

Recognising the value that experienced STEM professionals had to offer and the barriers that they faced to return to their vocation, Dstl provided a route back to work. Candidates received the support, encouragement and flexibility they needed to excel, whilst being involved in challenging projects spanning various technical areas. Dstl was impressed by the fantastic capabilities and skills of those returning, resulting in all the returners being offered ongoing positions.

STEM Returners are delighted to be partnering with Dstl again to offer a new group of returners a path back to a rewarding career with a supportive and inclusive employer.

Dstl recognises that returners often face an insurmountable barrier to returning to work after a career break, be that because of a perception by hirers of a deterioration of skills, or a lack of flexibility. This ground-breaking programme shows career break returners that Dstl values the skills that they have gained whilst out of industry by enabling a return to their career in a flexible and inclusive way.

The programme is open to men and women who have taken any length career break, as well as those who wish to transfer sectors but lack the relevant work experience.  Dstl is looking for returners to fill the following roles:

  • Defence Analyst
  • Data Engineer
  • Underwater Analyst
  • Operational Research Analyst
  • Radio Frequency and Electronics Engineer
  • Radar Engineer
  • Data Fusion Scientist
  • Security Engineer

Candidates accepted for the ‘STEM Returners’ programme will join a paid 12-week structured return to work programme.

If you have been away from your STEM career and are looking for an opportunity to return then our programme offers you the support needed to develop your technical and professional skills. As well as offering 1:1 mentoring and a learning environment like no other, at Dstl you will also get involved in projects that will really make a difference.

At the end of the 12 weeks, job offers may be made by Dstl to those who have shown the necessary skills and aptitude to join them. This isn’t just work experience, but a genuine opportunity to restart careers within an exciting organisation.

Candidates wishing to apply for the second programme can do so here!

Giles Moore, one of last year’s STEM Returners said: “My team leader gave me time to explore the organisation’s systems, build new relationships and come up with ideas of how I could contribute. I also had the opportunity to present my thoughts to the team halfway through my placement. It’s been a great experience”

Helen Christie, one of Dstl’s Talent Acquisition and Planning Advisors, said: “Dstl is committed to a flexible and supportive workplace so that people of all backgrounds and situations can succeed here and contribute to providing world-leading science and technology.”

Natalie Desty, Founder of STEM Returners said: “We are so excited to be running another programme with Dstl. Right from the outset Dstl recognised the huge value that returners had to offer and provided fantastic support and training to ensure their success.”

Dstl is at the heart of the UK’s safety and security. Our job is to innovate, analyse and solve problems. We’re also shaping the way governments think about defence and security, far into the future. That makes what we do really fascinating, and often unexpected.
