The Principal Mechanical Team Leader provides leadership and supervision to the mechanical engineering team. They will oversee multiple projects and will own the plans to ensure cost and schedule are both delivered within budget. The team leader will act as a technical consultant or project leader and apply fundamental engineering principles, procedures and techniques to perform complex mechanical engineering assignments. They will have the ability to manage high value pieces of work with teams of varying experience. The Team Leader will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and will have previous experience of managing a team with a proven record of delivery. This role will involve line management and development of direct reports from Graduate Engineer through to Principal Engineer experience.

Job Summary:

This role will involve line management and development of direct reports from Graduate Engineer through to Principal Engineer experience.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Take care for the day to day needs of direct reports including 121’s, development plans and performance reviews.
  • Plan the development of mechanical engineering resources.
  • Supervise electrical and mechanical disciplne engineers on project teams.
  • Reviewing customer requirements and specifying/reviewing subsystem requirements and verification methods.
  • Specification and analysis of simulation to mitigate design errors.
  • Specifies test control methods, pass/fail criteria, test strategy and equipment
  • Accountable for design specifications, analysis and recommendations.
  • Supports bids teams on new proposals.
  • Leads the preparation of estimates of high value pieces of work.
  • Prepares, maintains and executes project plans for high value pieces of work.
  • Liaise with and report to Management on project performance to schedule and budget.
  • Leads project teams, delegates project tasks and guides the project team.
  • Leads design reviews and technical meetings.
  • Leads root cause analysis investigations and implements solutions.
  • Leads presentations and proposals to internal and external customers.
  • Acts as design authority to sign off mechanical design outputs from the team.
  • Champions a high standard of engineering change and release.
  • Maintains quality standards and advises improvements/change to policy, process and procedures.
  • Acts as delegate for the Mechanical Engineering manager
  • Mentor mechanical team.
  • Assist in the hiring of new mechanical engineering team members.

  • Keep up to date on the latest Engineering techniques, materials and manufacturing methods.

  • In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed, the job holder is required to perform other duties assigned by their manager from time-to-time, as may be reasonably required of them.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • HND/HNC in Mechanical or General Engineering. Demonstrable engineering experience in a design role including some experience in a lead/management role is desirable.

or

  • BEng/BSc or MEng in Mechanical Engineering, General Engineering or Design engineering. Demonstrable experience including some experience in a lead/management role is desirable.

or

  • an applicable Master’s degree. Demonstrable experience including some experience in a lead/management role is desirable.

Skills knowledge and experience:

         

          Essential:

  • Experience in leading and motivating teams.
  • Ability to perform complex theoretical and analytical problem solving tasks.
  • Ability to lead large, high value pieces of work with varying experience project teams.
  • Desire for, and proven record of, planning, holding schedule and delivering in time and in budget.
  • Experience in consulting, specifying and analysing simulation to mitigate design errors.
  • Ability to conduct common engineering calculations and experience in specifying more complicated calculations.
  • Experienced in peer reviewing other designers work.
  • Experience using 3D Solid modelling software Solidworks or equivalent with experience of using CAD data management systems.
  • Experience producing estimates for high value pieces of work.
  • Experience in reviewing customer requirements and specifying subsystem requirements and verification methods.
  • Good understanding of designing sheet metal components, injection mould design and casting design techniques.
  • Good interpersonal and influencing skills.
  • Affective communication both verbal and written.
  • Ability to communicate at high levels and to non-technical people.
  • Ability to communicate in a commercial environment.
  • Good, affective attention to detail.
  • Ability to use typical office software such as MS Word, MS Excel and MS Powerpoint.
  • Has a desire to develop their own knowledge and career as well as the other mechanical engineering designers in the team.
  • Ability to conduct in depth investigations such as root cause analysis with proven record of execution.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience of designing revenue collection equipment including vending machines or special purpose machinery.
  • Understanding of global compliance such as CE marking, C Tick.
  • Experience in a scrum methodology.
