Binnies
Binnies are seeking Mechanical Design Engineers to work on both clean water and wastewater schemes, delivering engineering solutions ranging from concept design through to detailed design for construction. There will be opportunities to work on a diverse range of technically challenging projects within a community of mechanical engineers that can provide training and support to help you progress your career.
Typical responsibilities include:
- Production of clear and concise engineering deliverables appropriate for the intended audience including engineering sketches, general arrangement drawings, equipment sizing calculations, equipment and material selection, enquiry documentation, datasheets, schedules and reports.
- Compliance with in-house procedural & quality systems.
- Coordinating the development of key multidiscipline deliverables such as P&IDs.
- Managing design interfaces with other disciplines and integration of the mechanical design elements into the overall design.
- Working closely with project teams, other engineering disciplines, Project Managers, estimating, site and commissioning teams, CAD, Joint Venture partners and Clients.
- Providing guidance and direction to others from the same project and discipline.

Skills and Experience
- Experienced Mechanical Engineer, previous water sector experience is an advantage, but not essential. You may have experience from other similar sectors such as oil and gas, utilities, pharmaceuticals, maritime or water treatment works projects.
- Exposure to designing projects for construction (design & build environment).
- Be driven to progress your own career, expanding your technical knowledge and skill sets.
- Must be enthusiastic, adaptable and be driven to provide efficient engineering solutions.
Qualifications
- Requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in your home country or the country in which you are practicing.
- Member of the IMECHE or another relevant institution or ability to regain chartership. Engineers with aspirations for either chartered or incorporated membership in the future will be considered and Binnies can also provide mentoring support for your application.
What the Returning Professional will be getting involved with their first 12 weeks and beyond
You will be working as part of a multi-discipline team to create outline and detailed designs for a variety of water utilities projects. Working alongside process, electrical, ICA and civil engineers with clients such as Thames Water, Southern Water and Scottish Water to turn client level conceptual designs into detailed designs for procurement and construction / installation support.
Location & Working Pattern
- Redhill, Glasgow, Leeds, Chester.
- Flexible full or part time working (minimum 3 days a week) with flexibility for shorter days as needed.
- Returners will be expected to travel into the associated Binnies office three times a week. For the remainder of the week, they can either work in the office or from home. The ability to travel to client sites and offices is also essential.
