After relocating to the UK, Samar faced the challenge of finding work in a new and unfamiliar job market. Despite her extensive experience and skills, re-entering the STEM field proved daunting. However, through our STEM Returners programme at Jacobs, Samar found the support and resources needed to overcome these challenges. Now thriving as a an Assistant Design Manager, Samar’s journey is a testament to perseverance and the importance of a supportive network.
Here, she talks about her experience.
Hello, I’m Samar , and I want to share my journey from taking a career break to landing a permanent position at Jacobs, all thanks to the incredible support of the STEM Returners Programme.
Originally from Sudan, my passion for engineering led me to pursue a degree in civil engineering from The University of Science and Technology-Sudan . During my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with multiple NGOs, focusing on water supply and sanitation projects. My roles ranged from project coordinator to structural engineering design, allowing me to gain valuable experience in project management and technical expertise.
However, relocating to a new country posed challenges, and despite my qualifications and experience, I faced barriers when applying for roles. The lack of a professional network and unfamiliarity with the local job market made it daunting to navigate the recruitment process. That’s where the STEM Returners Programme came in. Their unwavering support, from understanding my situation to assisting with job applications and interview preparation, was invaluable. The programmes team stood by me every step of the way, providing guidance and encouragement, which boosted my confidence.
Thanks to the STEM Returners Programme, I secured a position at Jacobs as an Assistant Design Manager. Within six weeks, I transitioned from a returner to a permanent member of the team, marking a significant milestone in my career. Joining Jacobs has not only provided me with a platform to apply my skills but also opened doors for professional growth and development. I’ve had the opportunity to enhance my project management abilities, deepen my technical knowledge, and contribute to meaningful projects that make a difference.
Reflecting on my experience, I can confidently say that the STEM Returners Programme has been instrumental in shaping my career trajectory. Their dedication and support have been pivotal in my journey back to the workforce, and I’m immensely grateful for the opportunity they’ve provided me.
To fellow returners like myself, I offer this advice: Despite the challenges, believe in your capabilities and stay determined. Seek support from programmes like STEM Returners and surround yourself with positive influences. Remember, it’s never too late to pursue your dreams, and with perseverance and support, success is within reach.
In conclusion, my journey with the STEM Returners Programme has been transformative, and I encourage others to embrace the opportunities it offers. Together, let’s redefine what’s possible and pave the way for a brighter future in STEM.
