Phil started his engineering career over 37 years ago and has gained experience on a variety of complex electro-mechanical plant and transportation systems.
Phil decided to take a career break after feeling unfulfilled in his previous role. During this period, he was contacted by STEM Returners regarding an opportunity to re-enter the engineering field as a Training Officer and Engineering Lecturer with Engineering Trust Training.
After completing the 12 week programme at the Engineering Trust Training, Phil was made a permanent member of their team.
Read Phil’s return to engineering story below:
What was your working background before your career break?
I have worked in various industries throughout my career, usually heavy industries such as manufacturing, waste recycling and rail transportation. I am happy on the tools or in an engineering support role.
Tell us about your career break. Why did you take a break? How long was it for?
After many years on the shopfloor and having had a great job in an office supporting engineers, my job came to an end. Although I was successful in finding a new role, I wasn’t feeling satisfied, and I was feeling like I had settled for second best. I decided to have the career break to try and reset myself from these feelings.
What made you want to return to the industry?
Having tried to get into the field of training with my old employer and not being successful, I put it on the back burner, so when I was approached by STEM Returners with the role of Trainee Tutor in Engineering, I was excited with the opportunity and jumped at it with both hands. Having mentored apprentices all my working life, it was a natural step to take. I knew it would be challenging and yet rewarding at the same time.
What challenges have you faced when applying for roles? How did those challenges make you feel?
Being of a certain age does not help sometimes and this can cause a lack of confidence when applying for job.
Why did you approach STEM Returners?
When I saw the opportunity available, I knew it was right and felt confident in approaching STEM Returners about it.
How did STEM Returners help?
They made me feel confident in applying for the role and supported my journey from the beginning. Whilst working in the role, STEM Returners have been in regular contact with me, offering mentors if needed. I have plenty of mentors on site so have not needed them.
What was the end result?
Having completed the probation period and developed my own training plans, a new career in training is on the horizon for me.
How has this changed your career?
I am excited to go to work, every day being a new challenge. It certainly isn’t a walk in the park, but it does keep you on your toes, which is something that I need and enjoy.
What would you say about the programme overall?
The programme is well organised and well run, all the staff are professional and committed to what they do.
Do you have any advice for returners like yourself?
Don’t be afraid to try a new challenge, your life and work experience will stand you in good stead. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and take all criticism as constructive. Enjoy your new career, use your existing skills to make it your own.
