In 2017, STEM Returners was born out of a simple but profound recognition: the STEM sector was losing out on a wealth of untapped talent. Highly skilled professionals were hitting pause on their careers due to life circumstances, leaving behind a wealth of experience and knowledge. That same year, a gaping skills shortage was threatening innovation in STEM industries across the UK.
We envisioned a solution: returner programmes dedicated to bridging this gap, empowering experienced STEM professionals to reclaim their careers, and simultaneously providing employers with a pool of exceptional talent.
Our journey began small, fuelled by passion and an unwavering belief in the potential of returners. We meticulously designed programmes that combined return-to-work opportunities, mentorship, tailored training, and networking. We worked tirelessly to dispel misconceptions about career breaks, championing the unique value experienced STEM professionals bring to the workforce.
Early successes ignited a spark. Companies quickly recognised the benefits of diverse teams with fresh perspectives and seasoned skills. Returners found renewed confidence, reconnected with their passion for STEM, and secured fulfilling roles across various sectors. Word spread, and our community grew. Each placement and every success story helped energise our determination to expand our reach and impact.
Over the years, we’ve forged strong partnerships, collaborated with industry leaders, and earned recognition for our innovative approach. Our focus on diversity and inclusion has led to a more balanced and equitable STEM landscape. We’ve begun to shatter outdated notions about career trajectories, proving that breaks can be catalysts for growth.
Today, as we celebrate the milestone of returning 500 professionals back to STEM, we feel both humbled and strengthened. We celebrate the individuals who rediscovered their paths, the companies who embraced change, and the unwavering support we’ve received along the way. But the 500 mark is not an end goal; it’s a signpost.
As our annual STEM Returners Index highlights, the skills gap in STEM remains ever-present. Talent pools remain narrow, hindering innovation and progress. Our mission is as relevant as ever. We’re determined to expand our reach, offering tailored programmes for different industries, addressing unique challenges, and continuing to push the boundaries of diverse recruitment.
We envision a future where career breaks are seen as opportunities for growth, where experience is valued regardless of timelines, and where STEM workplaces are truly inclusive. We believe that STEM Returners plays a fundamental role in making this future a reality.
Join us in celebrating the transformative power of STEM Returners. Together, we can continue to build a more innovative, equitable, and dynamic STEM sector.
