Ulka is a talented engineer who, like many other technical professionals, found herself struggling to return from a career gap.
As a software engineer with previous experience in software development to go along with her bachelor’s degree in Computer Applications, Ulka had all the necessary skills and experience to be an asset to any organisation.
“Of course, I faced many rejections because of a career gap in my profile.”
Ulka’s matter of fact statement is a damning inditement of the industry’s attitudes towards capable engineers returning from a career break.
“I came to know about STEM returners on LinkedIn while searching jobs after a career gap/break.
“It was unbelievable for me to know that someone out there is genuinely supporting people like me to come back on the career track.”
As a talented software engineer, Ulka’s skills were in high demand, and she quickly secured a place on the STEM Returners programmed hosted by Edwards Vacuum.
“The team at STEM Returners helped me throughout the interview process. They also attended to all of my concerns and queries. It was a great feeling to have great support.”
“I always wanted to work within an organisation with a great infrastructure and global exposure. I enjoyed (during the placement) working on the shop floor, training, and learning PLC programming.
“In addition, I had to relocate to Bristol for the initial three months as I was required to be on site. My children were super excited about me attempting this opportunity. Staying away from my family in the lockdown period and pursuing a career opportunity, itself was a different experience.”
Edwards were also instrumental in helping Ulka secure residency in the UK as part of her employment.
“Edwards Vacuum sponsored my work visa. All of these events were one of a kind.”
Speaking about how the programme impacted her career, Ulka explained the positive impact her placement had:
“This programme boosted my confidence. It gave me a chance to know my strengths. In a short period of time, I have learned new technologies and improved my communication skills.”
With leave to remain in the UK, Ulka now sees a positive career ahead, with a permanent role as a Software Development Engineer with Edwards Vacuum now confirmed.
“I see a very nice and stable future ahead, one where I can work with a nice job profile, maintaining a good work-life balance. I hope to learn more and grow with Edwards Vacuum!”
