Carl Overs had a 15-year career in telecommunications working within implementation, test and service delivery across roles including Engineer, Team Leader and Manager. When his last position came to an end Corey found himself on an unplanned career break. As time went on, he was finding it more difficult to secure a meaningful permanent position and so decided to go back to University as a mature student and study Business Management. When Corey saw the BT STEM Returner programme advertised he didn’t hesitate to apply to get back to the career in which he had gained so much experience. Here is his story:
Why did you approach STEM Returners?
I had been looking for a position for a few months and had become disheartened with the process which seemed to revolve around sending CV’s and not getting any feedback. Whilst browsing the internet I noticed that STEM Returners were advertising for a role with BT that required similar experience and qualification requirements that I had, so I thought why not. It was a refreshing idea to be targeting candidates who had taken a career break.
How did STEM Returners help?
STEM returners was a great help for me as I have been out of work studying full time for the past 18 months and I was finding it hard to get back into work after such a long career break, they organized a full day workshop before our interviews to help boost our confidence and address any self-doubt.
What was the end result?
Firstly I joined the BT 12 week paid returners programme which was designed as a supportive way to learn the job and upskill. After the programme I was delighted to be offered a full time permanent role with BT Technology as a Network Engineer.
How has this changed your career?
The programme has given me a huge boost in confidence and set me up for a long-term career working for the UK’s largest Telecommunications Company.
Would you recommend the programme?
Absolutely! I believe that some of the best engineers could materialise from a programme like this, giving the benefit of having previous knowledge to the new employer and the also the benefit of a new opportunity for the employee…everyone is a winner!
